Help for seniors facing
M.T.O driving test

The Senior Driver Renewal Program requires that senior drivers, aged 80 years and over, pay the applicable licensing fee, complete a vision test and a knowledge test and take part in a group education session every two years.

A small number of drivers may also be asked to take a road test to have their in-car skills assessed.

The G2 road test includes a component of expressway driving. Prior to the G road test, you must complete a "Declaration of Highway Driving Experience" to ensure that you have sufficient expressway driving experience in order to proceed with the road test.

To proceed with the road test, you must "declare" by signing a form, how many times in the three months before the road test that you have driven on a 400 series highway and/or on a highway with a speed limit of at least 80 km/hr. You are required to indicate what was the average length of these trips (i.e. under 5km, between 5 and 15 km, over 15km).

Newcomers  to Canada
Help for Immigrants to get their Ontario driver's licence

If you have an International Driver's Licence, it is valid for 1 year if you are a tourist. However, if you are a resident of Ontario, it is valid for only 90 days.

If you plan on living in Ontario you need to get an Ontario driver's licence within 60 days of moving to Ontario.

If you have driven for several years in your home country you may be able to get your Ontario licence much faster than a new driver. Also, Canada has agreements with some countries that let driver's from these countries to get an Ontario licence without taking any of the road tests that new drivers do. Below is a list of countries whose licences may be converted to Ontario ones:

  • United States
  • South Korea
  • Japan
  • Austria (new)
  • Switzerland (new)
  • Germany (new)
